History

For more than half a century, the Kelsey-Seybold name has been synonymous with multispecialty medical care in Houston. Kelsey-Seybold Clinic was founded in 1949 by Mavis P. Kelsey, M.D., with the purpose of combining primary and specialty medical services in one location in Houston. A native Texan, Dr. Kelsey returned to Texas after practicing at the esteemed Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where he experienced working in a multispecialty group practice firsthand. He leased space in the Hermann Professional Building in the newly emerging Texas Medical Center (TMC) and set up his practice. Over the next two years, he welcomed two of his Mayo colleagues to Houston, Dr. William D. Seybold, a surgeon, and Dr. William V. Leary, an internist, to what became the Kelsey-Leary-Seybold Clinic.

Dr. Kelsey's brother, John R. Kelsey, Jr., M.D., another Mayo-trained physician and a specialist in Gastroenterology, joined the practice in 1953.

On Dec. 15, 1956, the Kelsey Research Foundation was established to provide scholarships and financial support for research. Today, the Foundation is involved in a variety of research projects with universities, pharmaceutical companies, government bodies and hospitals in the TMC. Research areas include cancer, epilepsy, diabetes, Cardiology, Gastroenterology and Obstetrics.

During the 1960s, the Clinic added more specialists and departments, including Pediatrics, Rheumatology, Dermatology, Urology and Ophthalmology. In 1964, the Clinic moved into new facilities at 6624 Fannin St., now the site of the O'Quinn Medical Tower at St. Luke's. Dr. Leary joined the staff of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 1965 and the Clinic's name was changed to Kelsey-Seybold Clinic.

In 1971, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic opened its first satellite clinic in Tanglewood at a time when it was unusual for Medical Center-based groups to deliver care outside of the Texas Medical Center.

Dr. William Seybold retired in 1979 and died in 2004 at age 89.

Without question, Dr. Mavis Kelsey was among Houston's most influential physicians. He led Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in the development of branch clinics, prepaid medical care and Occupational Medicine. He initiated and directed the Clinic's relationship with NASA, which led to other larger scale patient groups. He pioneered nuclear medicine, the use of paramedical personnel and electronic patient records. He performed early research on the clinical use of radioisotopes, publishing some 50 medical articles and is known as the first endocrinologist to administer radioiodine therapy to a patient in Houston in 1949. He retired in 1986, devoting himself to his family, writing more than a dozen books on art, history, genealogy and travel, and engaging in numerous philanthropic activities. He was a keen observer, a critical thinker, a visionary leader and a life-long scholar. When he died Nov. 12, 2013 at age 101, he left a legacy of coordinated, evidence-based healthcare that continues at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic today.

Dr. Kelsey was succeeded as Chairman of the Kelsey-Seybold Board of Directors by Stanton Fischer, M.D., from 1979-1983. He pioneered managed care in 1982, successfully steered Kelsey-Seybold through a national recession and oil bust, established the Clinic's Internal Medicine and Family Medicine departments, and helped conduct a landmark study on Vietnam War veterans exposed to Agent Orange. He also had an outstanding career teaching medical students, interns and residents as a professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and as chief of Pulmonary Medicine at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. Dr. Fischer died Aug. 13, 2016.

Dr. Fischer was succeeded as Chairman by James W. Kemper, M.D., who served as Chairman from 1983-1994. A medical pioneer who came to Houston as the city's first full-time specialist in Rheumatology, Dr. Kemper led the clinic during a tough economic time. It was during his tenure that the Clinic's flagship Main Campus was built at 2727 W. Holcombe Blvd. near the TMC.

In 1978, J. Michael Condit, M.D. joined Kelsey-Seybold. He later succeeded Dr. Kemper and served as Chairman from 1994-2001. Dr. Condit was succeeded by Spencer R. Berthelsen, M.D., in 2001.

Dr. Berthelsen led Kelsey-Seybold for 15 years as Chairman. His vision and ability to anticipate and navigate the future of healthcare has positioned Kelsey-Seybold for success. As Chairman, he championed tort reform to improve access to quality care, fearlessly advanced an electronic medical record system and started a Hospitalist group that changed hospitalized patient care. In 2007, KelseyCare powered by Cigna was launched as an accountable care health benefits plan. In 2008, KelseyCare Advantage was launched for seniors as a Medicare Advantage plan. In 2009, Dr. Berthelsen led the successful buyback of Kelsey-Seybold from St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital. In 2012, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic was first in the nation to earn NCQA designation as an Accountable Care Organization. In 2012, 16 Kelsey-Seybold locations were named Level 3 Medical Homes by the NCQA. In 2014, a $30 million Main Campus expansion added a state-of-the-art Radiation Center to the nationally accredited Kelsey-Seybold Cancer Center.

Tony Lin, M.D., F.H.M., took over as Chairman in 2016 as part of a planned transition. Dr. Berthelsen retained the role of Managing Director until his retirement on March 10, 2017. Dr. Lin, who grew up in Houston, joined Kelsey-Seybold in 1993. Dr. Lin held many leadership positions within the organization before being elected Chairman - including the development of Kelsey-Seybold's Hospitalist Program. His vision is to continue fostering an environment and culture that embraces innovation for the benefit of Kelsey-Seybold patients, physicians and employees.
