History
Sound Family Medicine began as South Hill Family Medicine in 1984, when Rebecca Sullivan, MD left military service to start a family practice in partnership with Mike Young, MD in a small office in Puyallup, Washington. Two years later, Hartland Medical Center was completed, and the practice moved to the new office. The concept was to locate the office near where patients lived and worked. Ed Pullen, MD joined the group after he left military service the following year.
Over the years, the practice has grown to include nurse practitioners and physician assistants, as well as board-certified family physicians. In September 2002, the practice changed its name to Sound Family Medicine when it expanded to Bonney Lake. The practice continued to grow and opened its third office in November 2004 at the Sunrise Medical Campus on Sunrise Boulevard. In early 2008, the Bonney Lake Same-Day Clinic moved into its own suite, dedicated to the urgent care needs of its patients. Drs. Taggart and Young also moved into their own space, Hartland III, across from the Hartland Medical Center offices in May 2008. In October 2008, the Sunrise office moved into a brand new facility on the Sunrise Medical Campus.

Community Involvement
Sound Family Medicine supports various local and national organizations, including: the American Cancer Society, Cascade Regional Blood Services, and the local food banks (Puyallup, Graham and Bonney Lake). Several providers also help out area school sports teams as team doctors.
In 2009, Sound Family Medicine partnered with the Tacoma Art Museum to bring David Macaulay's illustrative exhibit, "The Way He Works," to Tacoma. In celebration of its partnership with the museum, Sound Family Medicine hosted an ice cream social at the museum for patients and employees.
Sound Family Medicine staff volunteer for and attend many community events. Some events include the Roy Rodeo, Relay for Life and the Bonney Lake Healthy Living Expo. You'll find SFM doing everything from serving food at the concession stand to offering free blood pressure checks.
Each year, Sound Family Medicine's scholarship committee selects five to six high school seniors and two SFM employees to receive $500 scholarships. The awards are based on academic excellence and community involvement. The providers then attend the award ceremonies to present the recipients with their scholarships.
