Infobox for New Zealand towns and villages
I just created a small article about a village in New Zealand, and looked for an infobox template I could use on there, but couldn't find one suitable. The article is Arundel, New Zealand and all I've been able to do was to include a map so far. Is there a suitable infobox template? Regards, Hebrides (talk) 19:10, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

I would like other users opinions of this article. The creator is a new editor who says his reason for joining wiki is specifically for this purpose. New Zealand river articles
Hi all - a considerable number of stubs on New Zealand rivers have just ben created - almost all of them simply contain the text "The Foo River is a river in New Zealand", along with a survey reference. If anyone knows anything about these rivers - even if only whereabouts in NZ they are, then help would be appreciated in adding the regional category (e.g., Category:Bay of Plenty) and the relevant regional geo-stub (e.g., replacing {{NewZealand-geo-stub}} with {{Otago-geo-stub}}). More info would also be useful, of course, but sorting them by region would be a good place to start. All of these stubs are currently to be found in Category:New Zealand geography stubs. Hi, I did not find any adequate template for the RNZAF copyright. The RNZAF writes:

Regional categories and articles
Following on from the recent renaming of the article on Tasman to Tasman Region, I'd like to propose a fairly substantial change to the names of some of our NZ articles and categories. Before taking any of the categories to CFD, though, I'd like to run it by here and WPNZ first to see whether it would be worthwhile.
At the moment, the articles on our various official regions are titled in a fairly haphazard way. We have Wellington Region, Otago, and Canterbury, New Zealand, for instance. This could make for confusion - the article Gisborne, New Zealand is about both the city and region, Bay of Plenty is abotu both the region and the bay itself, and there's been seemingly neverending discussion about what Waikato is about. Several of the regions also shared their names with the old provinces, each of which has (or should have) its own article. Some regions have different names for different categories - we have Category:Marlborough, New Zealand and Category:Marlborough Region geography stubs, and Northland Region is the key article in Category:Northland, New Zealand (Southland is also like this).
I'd like to propose that the main articles for each of the regions, and any categories named for those regions, be in the form Foo Region (e.g., Otago Region, Bay of Plenty Region). As far as I know, we don't share any region names with regions of other countries (despite there being other Canterburies and Marlboroughs, there is no other Canterbury Region or Marlborough Region).
This would leave:
- Auckland Region / Category:Auckland Region
- Bay of Plenty Region / Category:Bay of Plenty Region
- Canterbury Region / Category:Canterbury Region
- Gisborne Region / Category:Gisborne Region (is this the official name? Regions of New Zealand uses both "Gisborne" and "East Cape")
- Hawke's Bay Region / Category:Hawke's Bay Region
- Manawatu-Wanganui Region / Category:Manawatu-Wanganui Region
- Marlborough Region / Category:Marlborough Region
- Nelson Region / Category:Nelson Region
- Northland Region / Category:Northland Region
- Otago Region / Category:Otago Region
- Southland Region / Category:Southland Region
- Taranaki Region / Category:Taranaki Region
- Tasman Region / Category:Tasman Region
- Waikato Region / Category:Waikato Region
- Wellington Region / Category:Wellington Region
- West Coast Region / Category:West Coast Region
So that would require moving 11 articles and 52 categories (possibly more articles, given there are things like List of schools in Otago). It's a fair amount of worth, but most of it would be by bot (after CFD) - I think it'd be worthwhile in the long run. Any thoughts? Grutness...wha? 10:10, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
I agree with this proposal. For the Gisborne and Nelson regions, I would favour splitting the regional material out of the existing articles immediately to form new Region articles rather than renaming the articles, which are primarily about the cities.
I suggest the proposal be extended to Districts as well, so we have each district with both an article and category, as in Far North District and Category:Far North District. Where there are current articles which combine information about a district and its major city, eg Wairoa, then the article should not be renamed, but at some point the material on the district should be split out into its own article.
An exception might be Chatham Islands, and Category:Chatham Islands. The Chatham Islands are a special territorial authority, but I think it would be unintuitive to rename the article or the category to "Chatham Islands Region" or to "Chatham Islands District"
I'm not sure how to deal with the cities which are also territorial authorities, since many cities will need disambiguation whether called eg "Hamilton" or "Hamilton City". I think we could leave this part of the problem for a later date.-gadfium 20:58, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
Okay, I'm going to go ahead with this on a piecemeal basis, starting with some of the less controversial or problematic ones - I'm taking Category:Northland, New Zealand and its subtypes to WP:CFD. Grutness...wha? 23:48, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

Molluscs of New Zealand (and elsewhere)
Hi folks, just wondered if you are OK about having more than a thousand articles in your project that are about the various species of molluscs that live in your general vicinity. Some of the land snails and even some of the marine species do appear to be endemic, but a lot of the marine species live elsewhere in the Indo-Pacific, so are not New Zealand specialities. Air New Zealand and Auckland City
I have added the information that Air New Zealand, the national airline of New Zealand and a major airline and corporation, is headquartered in Auckland City, which is comparable in population to Fort Worth, Texas (in 2000). Some users have continued to remove this information, saying that because the information about Auckland City's economy is incomplete, it should not be listed. I strongly oppose this concept, especially considering the fact that {{expand|section}} exists and that, the information about the headquarters is sourced to reliable publications that have written in detail articles about the headquarter facilities, which are located in the City of Auckland. We know how many people (about) work at the central HQ facility (about 1,000) and we know the market capitalization of Air New Zealand. Air New Zealand has a market capitalization of 1,331,553,351 [4]. Writing about a company with this market capitalization and 1,000 employees at the central headquarters says a lot about Auckland City. See Talk:Auckland_City#Economy WhisperToMe (talk) 07:11, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
- I have since found more information that should settle the issue: http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/council/projects/cbdproject/docs/theeconomyofcbd%20.pdf - This 2003 report states that Air New Zealand, along with two other companies, are three of the ten largest companies in New Zealand that have their headquarters in Auckland City. While Air New Zealand since moved its headquarters, its new facility is in Auckland City. WhisperToMe (talk) 07:52, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Astonishing blip in stats
I expected a blip in the pageview stats for Caversham, New Zealand when it went on the fromnt page on Nov 30 -and was not disappointed (viewcount). It pushed Caversham into the top list mentioned above.
What I didn't expect was the 'collateral fallout" -have a look at the spikes on Nov 30 for these connected articles: Dunedin, Dunedin Southern Motorway, South Dunedin, William Henry Valpy, Dunedin Southern Cemetery, Otago, the South Island... that last one is particularly impressive. Even New Zealand seems to have picked up some extra hits...

WikiProject New Zealand music
How about a sub-WikiProject of WikiProject New Zealand Music? It would be similar to WikiProject Australian music, with articles' talk pages still wearing the {{WPNZ}}

Year in New Zealand articles
A new user has attempted to add the following sections to 2010 in New Zealand: "Visits from the Famous and Royals around the world" and "Bands/Artist on Tour". I think these are an excessive trivialisation of the sort of sections that should be included on year pages. I can find no other instance of these categories being used in Year in Country articles (although I haven't checked them all, just the most obvious ones). There would undoubtedly be endless arguments about who qualifies as 'Famous', the only exceptions would probably be the Monarch of the UK and the Pope (if those tours involved large-scale public parades). The vast majority of musical acts visiting NZ could hardly be considered notable even on a year by year basis (the exception would probably be The Beatles). Annual events, such as the Big Day Out, are excluded from Year articles although they persist in Year in Music articles. If the were Year in New Zealand music articles (as there are for some other countries) visiting artists would belong there.

Notification regarding Wikipedia-Books
As detailed in last week's Signpost, WikiProject Wikipedia books is undertaking a cleanup all Wikipedia books. Particularly, the {{saved book}} template has been updated to allow editors to specify the default covers of the books. Title, subtitle, cover-image, and cover-color can all be specified, and an HTML preview of the cover will be generated and shown on the book's page (an example of such a cover is found on the right). Ideally, all books in Category:Book-Class New Zealand articles should have covers.
If you need help with the {{saved book}} template, or have any questions about books in general, see Help:Books, Wikipedia:Books, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikipedia-Books, or ask me on my talk page. Also feel free to join WikiProject Wikipedia-Books, as we need all the help we can get.

Meetup?
It's been quite a while now since the last meetup in Auckland. I wouldn't mind going to one this year some time, maybe around June/July? I haven't really been working on New Zealand articles that much that I can think of (the closest I can think of recently is the Asian paper wasp entry I started), but would like to meet some more contributors, keep the meetup thing going, and talk about promotion of Wikipedia contribution. I'm interested in hosting some seminars and public lectures about Wikipedia at the University of Auckland too.
We would need to promote the meetup early and effectively beforehand to get a good turnout. It might be good to try to have roughly simultaneous meetups in other areas, maybe Wellington and Christchurch, if there are enough people to come (I feel bad that only Auckland ever has meetups, but don't particularly want to go far to one myself). Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons
The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 35,715 as of May 1. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.
Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject New Zealand/Unreferenced BLPs. Currently you have approximately 187 articles to be referenced. Other project lists can be found at User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects/Templates and User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects.
Your assistance in reviewing and referencing these articles is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please don't hestitate to ask either at WT:URBLP or at my talk page. Thanks, The-Pope (talk) 17:10, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi all, this is just a friendly hello to let you know that the Military History project has undergone some changes recently which have resulted in a merge between the Australian task force and the New Zealand task force to create a new task force called the Australia, New Zealand and South Pacific military history task force. We currently have very few active New Zealand members, so if you are interested in getting involved please stop by. The task force can be found here: WP:ANZSP. There is a list of articles that are requested and others that need expansion. Cheers. -- AustralianRupert (talk) 22:33, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

Use of this page?
Considering we have this noticeboard, shouldn't this talk page be kept for discussions around the WikiProject itself? At the moment they seem very similar, just with different discussions. Adabow (talk) 10:12, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
+----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------+My preference would be for the first option. All it really needs is a bit of a clean up (i.e. shift all the talk from this page to the other), and then some ongoing management (say two or three people cutting and pasting new talk from this page to the other when it ended up in the wrong spot). In no time, everybody will get the hang of it. We've done exactly this with the politics task force pages (where discussions were distributed across both the talk page and the taskforce page) and it's now in top shape. M?ori Battalion article
Hello all, I'm a member/co-ordinator of the Military History project and have found myself working on a rewrite of the M?ori Battalion (just for a change of topic, as I usually work on Australian military history articles). Anyway, I've rewritten the article up to a B class standard, but have found over the past couple of days that the article has had pieces removed from it by a dynamic IP address. To be honest I don't have the content knowledge (I just followed what the sources said) to know whether or not the IP is correct, whether they are incorrect or if it in fact vandalism. As such, I am asking for someone who mght have a bit of specific New Zealand knowledge to take a look at the article and see whether the changes are correct or not. If they are, that's fine, just let me know and I'll back off. I rewrote the article to do the topic justice, but if I've introduced inaccuracies because of my lack of content knowledge I would be disappointed in myself for not fixing them. However, equally I don't want to allow the article to get trashed again (as it was in a poor state to start off with). Thus if anyone from this project would be so kind as taking a look and letting me know what you think, I'd be very grateful. Cheers. Take care. AustralianRupert (talk) 02:10, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
Highway infoboxes
Members of WP:HWY, with members of the Infobox Accessibility Task Force, been working on a project to consolidate all of the infoboxes for highway articles into one, {{infobox road}}. This master template currently supports 48 countries, Europe (for the supranational E-routes system) and Antarctica (for the lone "highway" there). As you can see, it supports New Zealand, and I've worked to convert the articles over on New Zealand highways. If there are any improvements to be made, please let us know so that we can upgrade the level of support and improve the articles. Our goal is to make one template with consistent display for highway articles on the English Wikipedia.
We already know that the "Major cities:" label is not optimal, and that would be our next update to make, adding a replacement parameter for destinations instead of cities. A simple AWB run can switch that over once added to the template. Additionally, in the initial conversion, I placed the tourist routes into the "alternate_name" parameter, but I had placed it initially in the "system" parameter which listed it at the bottom above the links to the highway system articles. Imzadi 1979 -> 23:27, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
Firstly, thank you for (belatedly) bringing this here for discussion. To me, the change seems a waste of wikieffort.
- The handful of people who are creating the NZ highway articles are already familiar with the existing template.
- A template designed to accommodate the peculiarities of every highway system in the world is necessarily much more complex. This just spends more of the wikimedia foundation's CPU time. I guarantee that in a few years time someone will say "this template is trying to do too much - it should be devolved into regional ones".
- You are adding further complexity to it to cope with our (99 maximum) articles
- In summary, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
If you do think that our template is "broke" in some aspects, it's much easier to modify our template than to convert all articles to the new one. dramatic (talk) 22:37, 4 July 2010 (UTC)
Well? Are there any further objections before restoring the conversions to Infobox road? --Rschen7754 06:54, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Sorry I'm late replying - sloppy internet connection recently. Some points I have to add:
- I designed both templates as a direct New Zealand version of the UK motorway infobox - I didn't even know Infobox Road existed, and even then it was designed for North American roads.
- Originally the Motorway box was designed with the Northern Motorway in mind - back then it was State Highway 1 south of Silverdale and State Highway 1A north.
- I created the SH57 article with infobox road as a trial - it works well with State Highway 57 as there are no major complications with Tourist Routes.
- We still have no infobox suitable for both the conditions of all-motorway State Highways (SH18 and SH20), or for touring routes.
I have no opinion on whether to keep or replace - although I do think the NZ-specific infoboxes are getting a bit old and do need to be updated if they are to be continued in use. If Infobox Road is to be used, the data for New Zealand needs to be updated to allow defaluting of the Maintenance field to the New Zealand Transport Agency, and to have State Highway Succession (e.g. SH2 article succession is SH1 before and SH3 afterwards Until there is such a consensus, I will use Infobox Road on a limited number of articles (namely SH20, SH57, Auckland Northern Motorway, Southern Scenic Route) as a showcase trial. Lcmortensen (mailbox) 05:31, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
From reading the above discussion I gather that the NZ editors are okay with the conversions to Infobox road. Can these conversions thus be done? --Rschen7754 18:50, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

New Zealand articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.
We would like to ask you to review the New Zealand articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (?) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.
We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

One thing uniquely Kiwi are M?ori electorates. That article isn't very comprehensive, though. I've recently written First M?ori elections, which goes a lot more into the historical context of that issue. It's quite new and I don't know where the score that the toolserver lists show comes from. Both have a relatively low score of 225, so are way below the cut off for articles that have been chosen (>1050). Ok, I'm probably biased, but one of those articles should be added. Naming convention for rivers
Hi, the other day I turned Alexander River into a disambiguation page, since New Zealand's river of that name is probably undeserving of being at the main article. Someone reverted one of my moves and while I was checking naming conventions for ammunition in order to remonstrate with them, I discovered that [Rivers] generally uses bracket disambiguation, but that all New Zealand rivers are currently using comma disambiguation. The project notes that UK and NZ use comma, while Australia and North America use brackets. I see no reason why we have adopted the comma, and advantages to switching to brackets. For example, in the Australian section of the disambiguation page Little River, there is a clearer distinction between towns (Little River, Victoria) and waterways (Little River (Dubbo)). Is it worth making the change? dramatic (talk) 09:18, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
I'd be happy to see a general discussion on the NZ naming conventions. The common practice for articles on other parts of the world is to use "name, country" for settlements, assuming "name" is ambiguous, and "name (feature)" for geographical features such as rivers and mountains. The guidelines are set out at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#Disambiguation. We do have quite a lot of rivers and lakes with names which are not unique within New Zealand, so "name (river)" might have to become "name (Canterbury river)", which seems rather ugly to me.-gadfium 19:11, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
I have a recollection of a discussion about NZ river and place naming conventions about six years ago. The US went for brackets and we went for a comma to create disambiguated pages. My preference is to use a comma since that is what is generally done in the real world. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 04:48, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

Retain Foo River, New Zealand
Conclusion
On the basis of the above I have started moving rivers. I haven't yet rewritten the naming convention guideline, since we haven't explicitly discussed other geographic features. Once again, LINZ generally includes the type of feature in its name, so the only likely need for disambiguation is the country. Therefore there is no real need to vary from the more general convention. dramatic (talk) 23:00, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Whoooaaah, Neddy!
Why was no mention of this discussion made at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (New Zealand) until after some kind of completion of discussion was done here? Surely that would be the place to announce that this sort of discussion is taking place! (Actually, it's where the diwscussion should have taken place in the first place...) It may also be why only four !votes were registered for what is a pretty far-reaching change in article naming. I oppose the change as proposed. There are several countries which use the same system as New Zealand currently does for rivers, with the same reason (i.e., it is the most common way that rivers are disambiguated in general writing (and yes, that does happen, D - it happened with me yesterday, talking about the Waiau, Southland and the Waiau, Marlborough). The United Kingdom is the most obvious with all of its rivers being disambiguated in the form River Foo, County where necessary. The same is true with other New Zealand geographical features, such as Lakes and Mountains, which are also disambiguated by commas. The only reason why Australia does things differently is because there are a considerable number of towns in Australia which have "Foo River" as their names - it is a more common practice there than here. Placenames and Macrons
After a long time away I have found some free time to edit some articles again. I have discovered a couple of placenames with inappropriate macrons, i.e. M?oribank and T?tara Park, that I think should be spelt Maoribank and Totara Park, because that is how they are spelt locally, here in Upper Hutt, and in the NZGB place name database. In my opinion, macrons should only appear in article names when they appear in the official (M?ori) name of the place, if that is also the official (English) name of the place as well. Putting macrons over letters in English words in order to suggest they are not actually English words but M?ori ones is getting a bit too PC for me. I get most concerned when the words originated from English speaking settlers or developers who chose not to put macrons in their English spelling of words that they had borrowed from the M?ori and everyone has now accepted that their common usage is without macrons. But before I act too boldly, I would like to know what do others think?

Onepoto
Does anyone think there is a primary topic for Onepoto? We have:
- The suburb in Porirua (Onepoto, New Zealand)
- A village near lake Waikaremoana (we don't even have an article!)
- The domain (and crater) in Auckland Onepoto (volcanic crater)
- ...and the nearby Onepoto Bridge
The settlement near Lake Waikaremoana is the only entry for the name in Wises New Zealand Guide. Google seems to have many more results for the Auckland domain than for Porirua, but this could be distortion from sports notices. It is arguable that a standalone village might have primacy over a suburb, especially since it is much older. dramatic (talk) 18:32, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

Had they no idea what headaches they were going to cause us? The question at hand is how to disambiguate two rivers named Rainy River, both of which are in the Tasman Region. Niue and Tokelau articles
While doing assessments, I have removed the WPNZ template from some articles on Tokelau and Niue. Although technically part of New Zealand, the articles are better served by their inclusion in WP:WikiProject Polynesia and the appropriate task-forces. In cases where the article is about the NZ/island relationship or there is a non-trivial reference to New Zealand, I would retain the WPNZ template. Thank you for your feedback. I've just done 2001 Birthday Honours. For reference, the commandline I'm using to generate the tables is:
cat 2001.jb.html| sed 's^
^\n^g' | grep "\(dd\>\|p\>\|b\>\)" |perl -pe 's/([A-Z])([A-Z]*)/\1\L\2\E/g' | sed 's^$^||^' | sed 's/^/|-\n|| sed 's/,/ || ||/' | sed 's/\. /]] || /' | sed 's/ of / [[Wikipedia talk:WikiProject New Zealand/Archive 3/'| sed 's^||J.P.,^J.P.||^' | sed 's|<[^>]*>||g'

A commendation to all New Zealand Wikipedians
I travel far and wide through the pages of Wikipedia - from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe - but I also spend time on the pages relating to New Zealand. During my editing and reading of Wikipedia I have gained the impression that the New Zealand articles and categories are extremely well written and maintained. More often than not they have a page layout that follows the Manual of Style and one that is emerging as a preferred standard on many other well maintained pages - it is also one that I like.
Does New Zealand have a greater number of competent Wikipedians per capita than other countries? If so, is it the often stated egalitarian nature of New Zealanders that makes us contribute to Wikipedia? There is a huge amount of data that can be sifted to see how New Zealand compares to other countries in terms of editing quality. This would be an interesting project that could be followed up.
So the New Zealand Wikipedians need a collective pat on the back for good work done to date. Good on ya, mates!-- Alan Liefting (talk) - 21:23, 12 August 2011 (UTC)
Help with database required
If somebody has the capability of interrogating a database, I'd be grateful for a helping hand. I've got a list article on Christchurch heritage structures almost ready to go, but had to reformat the way the referencing works. The draft article was created in somebody's userspace in the German Wikipedia. When the lot got copied across to the English Wikipedia, I encountered the problem of maxing out on the number of templates. I'm in the process of changing how the article is referenced and there are two steps still required:
- shift the refs from the first column to the second column (after the text); that's relatively easy to do and I'd be happy to do it by hand (note that I've done this already for the first four entries)
- replace the text "addtitle" in the reference by the name that the item has on the NZHPT database - this is the task where some clever programming could facilitate a lookup.
Can anybody tackle the (second) task? Schwede66 22:31, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
List of historic places in Christchurch
The List of historic places in Christchurch was published a few days ago, and our fellow DYK editors were kind enough to run it on WP's homepage on the first anniversary of the 2010 Canterbury earthquake. It's been a major piece of work collating the photos and putting this list together, but it's not yet done. For those of you based in Christchurch (or visiting), I've put a list of buildings that don't have photos yet onto the article's talk page. Any help would be appreciated. There's also some concern been raised about the use of Commons categories, so if you've got any useful ideas of how to do things different or better, please let us know.
I've also had two rather different pieces of feedback on the collage:
- "I suggest modifying or replacing the montage currently in the lead image spot. The juxtaposition of different camera angles and image distortions is dizzying."
- "I like the montage, very nice."
If somebody with graphic design skills and a bit of spare time could come up with something better than my amateurish attempt, that'll be great. There's certainly no shortage of images to choose from! Schwede66 02:18, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Pronunciation
We must always assume these articles will be read by people outside NZ, people who don't speak with a Kiwi accent. Whenever we add pronunciation, especially for Maori words or place names, we should use international standard pronunciation.
What prompted me to write this is the entertaining article on Ngawi, a small Wairarapa town (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ngawi,_New_Zealand). It says to pronounce Ngawi as "Nar wee". That's terrible; only people who are "R-droppers" can pronounce it using that guide. Anyone who pronounces their Rs would get the sound hideously wrong. If someone knows IPA, it would be really good to replace this bad pronunciation guide with a proper one. Haryadoon (talk) 07:37, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

The Signpost interview
New Zealand Castles (Wikipedia menitions ONLY TWO - but I think there's THREE)
Hi. I was born .. as all (older) kiwi's were. Sometime Last Century. But.. I was also - born 7 raised.. within 20miles of (what I was told was):
A CASTLE.
Being as it was.. A Stout 3story, Solidly built Red Brick Collection of Buildings.. All (Ok - not enclosed in an outer wall as such- but individully all) All buildings in & around the main structure.. Were HIGH WALLED Perapetted (with Flat Roof - Raised wall embattlement's).
Basically -- an exact replca of what a CASTLE .. should look like.. When built in a harsh INLAND environment -- on flat land (with no mote).
Thus: To "learn" today - that NZ is considered to "have' only two CASDTLE's .. One of which was Cargill's (now derilct) With the other being "Larnach" ? Mistifies me somewhat.. As I do "know" the one that I grew up around. (and that could be EASILY SEEN - before the trees grew too large) And: i & through .. were MANY public tours & afternoon tea sessions served.. Before the bulding's Embattlements were classified as being too hazardous and unsafe.. BUT- which is "still" used as the Noble Mans House of residence (Nobleman - I was told.. is they whom being- is the LANDHOLD's RUNHOLDER)
Thus: Why is there no mention. of the Earnscleugh Station CASTLE. A huge 3story multi roomed mansion.. With Fortified Embattlementation's ON EVERY OLD BUILDING (& on the horse stables as well).
? Or is that CASTLE -- not a Castle.. (simply because it isn't in Dunedin). QUIX4U (talk) 20:23, 8 October 2011 (UTC)
p.s. The SHENNAN Brothers.. were.? I do also believe- the 1st PERMANENT settlers. In & Around Alexandra.
One of the Shenna Brothers .. built a HUGE mansion at Galloway. A twin Shyst Rock (structured) building with 2 long passage ways And at the (EAST) end .. a long interconnecting passageway Accessing across the ends - between & thus connecting the two outer parralel sections Much the same as a horizontal |___| "building_floorplan layout" Otherwise known as Galloway Station (Andrew Preston's Runhold, of ~30,000 acres~)
The Other Shennan Brother. Built the HUGE CASTLE On open desolate treeless sandy FLATS (bang smack) in the middle of Earnscleugh. Earnscleugh Station. WITH ALL BUILDINGS HAVING: 1/- an open topped access to the roof as if it were a "floor", & 2/- Highwalled Fortified Perapet's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlements) & 3/- An UPPER ledge across these .. upon which to "rest" small arms.. Or simply to provide a more robust upper continuous plinth, Over the top of the CASTLE'ATED (fortified) Parapet -- Preceding unsigned comment added by QUIX4U (talk o contribs) QUIX4U (talk) 20:44, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

DigitalNZ is a National Library of New Zealand project that aggregates New Zealand content from across the internet and redistributes it through APIs and so forth. Sub cats for the regions of New Zealand
I have been tidying up the subcats of Category:Regions of New Zealand. For each region I have created subcats by topic, such as education, environment, politics, transport, similar to the the structure of Category:New Zealand. It was well overdue since the parent categories had collected a disparate series of articles making navigation a little more difficult. The Category:Regions of New Zealand subcats are now cleaned up but there is a huge number of articles lurking around that can be used to populate the categories that I have created. One part of my re-categorisation is contentious. See Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_New_Zealand/politics#New_Zealand_electorate_categories. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 19:05, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

I uploaded the image at right today and added it to the Tane Mahuta article, with me as author and released PD. It was subsequently listed at Possibly unfree files, where the reason for listing is given as "commons:COM:FOP#New Zealand suggests that laws are similar to the United Kingdom, where photos of signs like this aren't allowed". Before I comment there, I am asking here if anyone has experienced such an event where a user says a commons guideline suggests something, and on that basis removes an image. And how did you deal with it? I took quite a few photographs in the Hokianga a week ago which would be useful for wiki articles, but I won't consider uploading them if the suggestion is valid. Please read the section on conflict of interest. Editors with COIs are strongly encouraged--but not actually required--to declare their interests, both on their user pages and on the talk page of the related article they are editing, particularly if those edits may be contested. Editors who disguise their COIs are often exposed, creating a perception that they, and perhaps their employer, are trying to distort Wikipedia. Offender9000 (talk) 05:18, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

There are a lot of these, but I'll probably impose a 15 (or 20?) year minimum run or one year full time support criteria for inclusion. An overview of these can be found at the book council, but in most cases the aouthoratative source is somewhere else and that page is out of date. Thoughts? Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/NZ/Dictionary of New Zealand Biography
I'm taking another look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/NZ/Dictionary of New Zealand Biography since there doesn't seem to have been much progress in a while. (a) I've fixed all the URLs on the subpages (DNZB has moved into Te Ara and while it didn't break any URLs, the search didn't recognise the redirects) (b) I've created a new category Category:People with biographies in Te Ara (c) I've written a Greasemonkey script to create sub-stubs from the pages. For example [13] from [14] (d) I'm planning on mass-creating, by hand, quite a few of these (probably a hundred in the first instance) (e) I would value feedback on the example page above, I know it's short but is it correctly styled? Part of the reason I'm asking here is that I've just been given the autopatrolled right, so I have no opportunity for feedback through that mechanism. Stuartyeates (talk) 03:37, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
I've now finished [[Wikipedia:WikiProject_Missing_encyclopedic_articles/NZ /Dictionary_of_New_Zealand_Biography/N-Z |N-Z]], or at least those articles on which (a) my script works and (b) clearly meet the criteria of having an article. There are a reasonable number of names on the list that have only a shared article (usually sibling groups, look for pairs of red links on the list), I've not created articles for these. I've not thoroughly checked disambiguation pages either. There are also some names that appear to be on the list but not in the encyclopedia (maybe a maiden-name issue). I feel that these are best done by hand. I'm going to take a break before starting in on A-M. Stuartyeates (talk) 07:45, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
Questions
I'm currently re-writing my script for the second half of the list and would like feedback:
- I'm thinking of adding all women to Category:New Zealand women and all men to a newly created Category:New Zealand men category. Does that sound sane? Should Category:New Zealand men be a hidden category?
- Can I treat DNZB as an authority for iwi? If they say someone is in an iwi and WP has no other mention or category for that iwi, should I make a iwi stub and category?
- I'm thinking that once I'm done I'll ask a bot to add all people in Category:New Zealand M?ori people to the M?ori task force as per Template:WikiProject_New_Zealand; this can wait until right and then end and be done in a single pass. Does that sound sane?
- Are there any other things I should be adding? Ideally things that can be done automatically?
Cheers Stuartyeates (talk) 03:46, 29 January 2012 (UTC)
Done
I've now finished all A-Z. The only articles left are those (a) which feature more than one person and (b) those that break my script. I'll not be creating articles for either. There's a stack of work to be done including (a) work on categories (b) work on iwi/hapu links and categories (c) moves/redirects per WP:COMMONNAME (d) adding names to disambiguation pages and hat notes as appropiate (e) rounding up and motivating editors to expand the articles. Stuartyeates (talk) 19:32, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Other stuff that still needs to be done (f) get a bot operator to all biographies in the Category:New Zealand M?ori people to the the M?ori task force; all biographies in the Category:New Zealand musicians to the the music task force; and all biographies in the Category:New Zealand politicians to the the politics task force (g) when MCH have finished their current work to normalise macronisation in the DNZB, normalise our use against theirs (yes, involves manually looking at all biographies) (h) probably some otehr stuff I've forgotten. Stuartyeates (talk) 02:48, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Category:New_Zealand_people is now empty. As well as the categories mentioned above, Category:Iwi and hapu especially has been thoroughly populated. I'm pretty much considering this work as done now. Stuartyeates (talk) 07:04, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Contents of the United States diplomatic cables leak (New Zealand)
This article covers the various cables released by Wiki leaks on a number of topics of note. The title and article are quite obscure and I think it would be better to have the individual paragraphs moved into the major articles on the topics mentioned. This would mean that anyone researching the topics would be aware of the US diplomatic take on the item. I also think that over time the knowledge of Wikileaks impact on the NZ scene would be better kept. What do others think? NealeFamily (talk) 02:03, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

WikiWomen's History Month
Hi everyone. March is Women's History Month and I'm hoping a few folks here at WP:New Zealand will have interest in putting on events (on and off wiki) related to women's roles in New Zealand's history, society and culture. We've created an event page on English Wikipedia (please translate!) and I hope you'll find the inspiration to participate. As he self-publishes his works I have been unable to find much in the way of independent references. I have not, to date, found any reviews of his work although some must exist as he cites various critics in his publicity. Odd that you should say that, Sarah. I didn't know about Womens History Month, but I've just added several articles dealing with the question of infanticide in colonial New Zealand which deal with cases that pertain to four such women, either acquitted or who had capital sentences commuted to life imprisonment- Caroline Whitting (1872); Phoebe Veitch (1883); Lillian Fanny Jane Hobbs(1907); and Winifred Carrick (1917). I noticed that the Lillian Hobbs article seems to be having problems meeting the noteability guidelines. At the same time, though, I would also note that apart from the Minnie Dean piece, there is little else available on Wikipedia about the problem of infanticide in colonial New Zealand. Could I suggest a new category, 'Infanticide in New Zealand' ?Calibanu (talk) 23:50, 6 May 2012 (UTC)User Calibanu

New Zealand Electronic Text Centre
The New Zealand Electronic Text Centre has just rebranded and changed it's URLs from www.nzetc.org to nzetc.victoria.ac.nz. This impacts on approximately 2468 URLs in article namespace. There should be appropiate redirects in place to avoid breaking any links (if any links are broken please let me know, either here or on my userpage) and these redirects should continue to work for > five years. Once the dust has settled (~ a month) I plan to file a bot request to change the links en-mass rather than rely on the redirect. On the positive side, the new URL makes the relative status of the NZETC clearer. Disclaimer: As per my user page I have significant conflicts of interest in relation to this. A problem of my own making: Category:New Zealand M?ori people
Maybe this question belongs on Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_New_Zealand/M?ori_task_force, but this page is a little more high-traffic.
I recently add a whole lot of articles for M?ori people as part of my DNZB work. As part of that, I added people to Category:New Zealand M?ori people as well as per-iwi/hap? categories that I made up as I went along (named based on the iwi/hap? page). I've now ended up in a bit of a mess. The main symptoms are: (a) Category:New_Zealand_M?ori_people containing many assorted random things which are confusing to me, let alone someone hew to the field (b) Category:Rangatira which is problematic because there is no reliable measure for membership (c) List of M?ori people which is also problematic because there is no reliable measure for membership (d) Some iwi/hap? pages (i.e. Ng?ti Kahungunu containing long lists which duplicate membership in their respective categories, and others not.
I would like to propose (1) a new Category:New Zealand M?ori people by waka, iwi, hap? or whanau as a parent of the new iwi categories (sub cats would contain only people) (2) rewrite the text at Category:New_Zealand_M?ori_people to make it clear that this is the primary decomposition (3) only list people in Category:New_Zealand_M?ori_people if they're not in a sub cat of Category:New Zealand M?ori people by waka, iwi, hap? or whanau (4) delete Category:Rangatira and List of M?ori people making sure that all the members are in appropriate other categories (I'd fix incoming local links and redirect the pages to M?ori culture and M?ori culture to handle external links) (5) Trim membership lists on iwi/hap? pages to only dead people (or 10 in total for small ones) (6) recast Category:New Zealand M?ori people by occupation to match Category:New Zealand people by occupation where possible, including links between them. Quite a few new and existing categories could also do with more explanatory text. Stuartyeates (talk) 07:58, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
This is now complete. Category:New Zealand M?ori people is once again a managable size, and about evenly divided between contemporary people and early M?ori, all of whom are of unknown iwi/h?pu (or at least unknown in the article). Stuartyeates (talk) 09:59, 3 June 2012 (UTC)
New Zealand Historic Places Trust
I've started work on the New Zealand Historic Places Trust register in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles namespace, you can see it here. I've started with Wellington (because I know it reasonably well) and with Category I places (because I believe that they're notable). I'm a little confused about the use of commas vs paraentheses for disambiguation, i.e. Government House (Wellington) vs Government House, Wellington. The architecture disambiguation rules (which I had presumed to be operating under) appear to disagree with the placename disambiguation rules. Conveivably we need both, with one being a redirect. Stuartyeates (talk) 20:49, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
I've had another crack at this. I've changed the table layout and done cat I and cat II places for five regions. The entries for churches are going to take quite a bit of work to get into shape, but not nearly as much work as is going to be required for the many places just called Pa, Terrances or Ovens. House and Cottage are also common, but presumably hose will have been solved in other countries. See New Zealand Historic Places Trust. If anyone has a region they're particularly interest in me doing next, give me a yell. Stuartyeates (talk) 06:47, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
- So if you want to remove the two redundant columns, maybe you replace them with one column for 'Commons'.
- Neither 'relocated' nor 'demolished' would appear to be needed or desirable for the WP article name. If it's been demolished, the article will explain that. If it's been moved, well, it's still about the same structure, it's just that it's been in different locations. Presumably, one article will cover the various locations (e.g. Victoria Clock Tower).
- I've also struggled with 'house' and 'cottage' and in the end, I have settled on 'House at xyz Example Street' and 'Cottage at abc Example Avenue' (there are some older categories on Commons based on 'xyz Example Street'). In all reality, if a house or cottage doesn't even have a name, it's not very likely to be notable, so it's probably not a big issue.
Department of Corrections (New Zealand) yet again
This article is still a dog's breakfast of wild claims that I don't have the time (nor the knowledge of the Department's workings) to address. I've removed the most obviously tinfoil-hatted claim and reinstated an NPOV tag (which will probably have been reverted by the time anyone sees this) but it would be really appreciated if it could be looked at by someone with enough spare time, some knowledge of the subject and the diplomatic skills necessary to deal with an editor who is a capable writer but who doesn't understand Wikipedia standards. Background: There was a previous requested-move survey which ran from late May to mid June. There was a great deal of controversy surrounding the closure and subsequent events, which involved a number of reverts and re-reverts which are the subject of an ongoing arbitration case. There was a move review process, which was closed with a finding that the original requested-move closure was endorsed; however, the move review process is relatively new and untried. -- P.T. Origins of Queen Carnival - NZ
The Queen carnival page states: The first provincial Queen Carnival in New Zealand was held in Dunedin on 27 August 1915. That statement appears to be incorrect. A news report in The West Australian (Perth, WA) Thursday 5 August 1915 p. 2, suggested that [war relief] funds should be raised by means of a 'Queen Carnival," a method which [an anonymous correspondent] said had been employed with great success in New Zealand. He enclosed a cutting from a Wellington paper, to show that a recent "Queen Carnival" conducted in that city had yielded £100,000. Further, the Cairns Post (QLD) Tuesday 24 August 1915 p. 8, reported: Mr. R. H. Williams, who won the New Guinea tour in connection with the Queen carnival held in Wellington, N.Z., arrived in Sydney... Thus the winner of the Wellington Queen Carnival prior to August 1915 was a Mr. R. H. Williams... and he had arrived in Sydney prior to the Dunedin Carnival.Danglez (talk) 11:09, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

Rotoroa Island
Italic text
Just a little confused it says a couple leased the island from the salvation army then they gifted it to Auckland Council after that. Not sure how you can gift land you don't own? This probably needs to be fixed. They either bought the land off the salvation army then gifted it or the leased the land then the salvation army gifted the underlying freehold title to auckland council, or they terminated the lease and the salvation army gifted the land to the auckland council. -- Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.73.198.161 (talk) 04:00, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
Pacific Media Mess
There are a cluster of articles: Pacific Media Centre, Pacific Media Watch, Pacific Journalism Review and David Robie, which have been created by a small group of editors in a promotional manner. I have no doubt that there is notability here, but it seems very doubtful there's four articles worth of notability, even bearing in mind that we're desperately short of coverage on pacific topics. I'm tempted to merge and redirect Pacific Media Centre and Pacific Media Watch to David Robie. Thoughts? Stuartyeates (talk) 22:31, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti == Ng?ti Hauiti ?
Ng?ti Hauiti is a stub with little or no actual content. I'm thinking that it may be a synonym of Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti. The meaning of the two names suggest that they are. Stuartyeates (talk) 02:41, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Bill
There is lots and lots of coverage about this appearing in many reliable sources (as well as the usually flood of partisan pres releases). Much of this boils down to name-calling and is clearly inappropriate for the relevant section of Same-sex marriage in New Zealand. Is it inappropriate to put in the politicians pages? I'm thinking of things like United Future leader Peter Dunne distanced himself from his former colleague, calling Mr Copeland a "serial nutter". He added that the Conservative Party was "welcome to him". reported in http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10847505 Is there a standard section name for a politicians' stance on same-sex marriage? Auckland Councillors
Hi all, Cameron Brewer has been nominated for deletion. The wider question around this will be, is the Auckland Council big enough to make the councillors notable (like MPs) or should they be assumed to not be notable (ala all the other councils). This would also effect Alf Filipaina, Michael Goudie, Des Morrison, Calum Penrose, Noelene Raffills, Sharon Stewart, Wayne Walker (politician) and potentially Penny Hulse and Sandra Coney. Proposed deletion of Pre-Maori settlement of New Zealand conspiracy theories
The article Pre-Maori settlement of New Zealand conspiracy theories has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Kleinzach 11:36, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi all. A few weeks ago, I created National colours of New Zealand. Currently, it only has three incoming links, and I'm currently adding more, but as I'm not particularly familiar with NZ, I'd like to request that someone find a few relevant articles to link to it, otherwise it will effectively remain an orphaned article. - George Cooke (rower)
- John Solomon (rower)
- Harold Thomas (boxer)
I have added a number of "stub" articles about medal winners and some others (Olympics, Winter & Empire Games, prewar) from the SR & NZOGC website. Re Harold Thomas (boxer) born 1913 (no date) according to the SR Website. He was 24 when he died, from Papers Past, and a search of the Registrar-Generals online "historic" website found him born 1909 and narrowed the date down (by gradually halving the range of dates searched) to 11 January 1909.
Re sources, harder when they are Empire/Commonwealth Games only! I have found in Papers Past that swimmer J Davies in 1938, Sydney, see New Zealand at the 1938 British Empire Games, was J C W Davies, possibly Jack (the article has John) and he was from Taranaki and in the 220y breaststroke (but off form). An Otago University student; I thought Doctor perhaps - but he is not on the University of NZ list of graduates. Archives NZ, Wellington has a file of clippings from Internal Affairs about the 1938 games; we sent a big team as Sydney was close but Truth thought there were too many who "hadn't an earthly" of getting a medal. Auckland Super City
Isn't it about time we consigned the Waitakere City category to the history books, as the Waitakere City Council no longer exists? I have lived in Henderson for most of my life. I lived through the change from Henderson being a suburb of "West Auckland" to a suburb of Waitakere City in 1989, and now back to being a suburb of "Auckland West" again since 2010. I have always considered myself a West Aucklander (or Westie), and not a Waitakerian or whatever. Now that the WCC has been subsumed by the Auckland Council, shouldn't we lose the "Waitakere" nomenclature for anything to do with West Auckland? Sure, there are still relevant and required uses for "Waitakere", such as the Waitakere ward, the suburb of Waitakere, and the Waitakere City Football Club who may not have kept in step with the times, themselves. Apart from that, let's consign the Waitakere City Council on Wikipedia to the history books, where it belongs. AugurNZ ?? 21:21, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Bridge to Nowhere.
Back in 1995 I firsr walked the road to the Bridge from the Raetihi road end with Wayne and our sons. It is a pictureque part of the country and it is difficult to adequately describe the beauty and the granduer of the Valley itself. In places the road is as it was when last maintained back in 1941 however the road has slumped badly in nother places which can make access difficult and I would advise tramping this route only on dry weather as a result. There are plenty of places to camp and I would suggest speaking to the Department of Conservation for updates as ther ehas been some work done to improve access over the years. The Bridge itself was signifiantly restored some years ago and stands as a monument, both to the original builders and to the settlers of the Valley. When I was last there in 1998 there was still some fences standing with a wooden gate still swinging, just before Battleship Bluff. Interested people should read a book written by an history, it's called the Bridge to Nowhere and gives a detailed history from the view of some of the residents with photos which build a picture of what life was life in the Valley up to 1942. Spend some time talking to older residents in Raetihi if possible, some of mthese people knew residents or their parents did and one can learn much from first hand knowledge. One can really feel the history of this place! Enjoy. -- Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.127.19.60 (talk) 01:58, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Local body elections in the Wairarapa
An identical or near-identical section has been added to the articles on Carterton, New Zealand, South Wairarapa District, Masterton, and Ron Mark about a spoof video and proposals for a unitary authority. I feel the section is undue weight, but it is referenced and the anon who added it has cooperated with my attempts to clean it up and remove parts where the references didn't support the content. My initial feeling was to leave it while the local body elections were on and consider trimming it back or removing it entirely once the dust had settled. However, I did not at first realise it affected so many articles.
One solution might be for someone to write an article on Wairarapa mayoral elections, 2013 including this content but also the lists of candidates as seen in similar articles (eg Wellington City mayoral election, 2013), and then link it from the four articles above but without a summary.-gadfium 21:12, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

Can I suggest, though, that before anybody just does blanket reverts, can we please keep the content (which is mostly rather valuable) and have the reference spam replaced with a {{cn}} template? I found another one today (reported to talk page). I've been going though this page looking for obvious spam. Te Kooti's War and Te Kooti
These articles are again being heavily edited by User:122.62.226.243 using a work by Judith Binney. As it has been determined that Binney's work is not necessarily NPOV, and given the previous discussion on the IPs talk page about its use (along with the fact that the IP seems incapable of citing properly), it is probably worth keeping an eye on these articles. HMAS/HMNZS Kiama
The HMAS Kiama spent 24 years (1952-1976) in the RNZN but the relevant section in the article is almost entirely unreferenced. It is also a bit spartan given the length of service. None of the usual (admittedly Australian-centric) sources turn up anything, but there's surely something available somewhere. Any assistance in referencing this section greatly appreciated, even if its just pointers on where to look for sources. Euryalus (talk) 05:45, 27 December 2013 (UTC)

Popular pages tool update
As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).
Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.
If you have any questions, want to report any bugs, or there are any features you would like to see that aren't currently available on the Toolserver tools, see the updated FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Mr.Z-bot (talk) (for Mr.Z-man) 05:19, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Leaflet For Wikiproject New Zealand At Wikimania 2014
Hi all,
My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.
One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.
This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:
o Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film
o Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.
o Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.
o Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____
o Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen's Collaborative, The Signpost

Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/NZ/New Zealand Historic Places Trust list problems
Hi all - sthere are distinct peculiarities to how the subpages of Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/NZ/New Zealand Historic Places Trust are organised.
Take, for example, the page Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/NZ/New Zealand Historic Places Trust/Otago I. There follows a lovely long list of article blue and red links, each accompanied by four columns, A, B, C, and D, for "Foo, Otago", "Foo, New Zealand", "Foo (Otago)", and "Foo (New Zealand)". All very well, except quite a few of the buildings listed as missing are - as per the WPNZ naming guidelines - at "Foo, Dunedin", "Foo, Oamaru", etc., or in the case of schools, at "Foo (Dunedin)", "Foo (Oamaru)", etc. Only buildings that are part of the University of Otago are listed as "Foo, Otago". Furthermore, the articles in the first column (i.e., named simply "Foo") are a mix of acceptable articles (such as Dunedin Railway Station) and generic/dab/otherwise invalid articles (such as Olveston, National Bank, and House). The system looks like it needs some kind of major overhaul to be of any use... Grutness...wha? 13:29, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

I've pretty much reached the end of this project and am declaring it done. There are still a couple of red links in Hector Memorial Medal, which are either historical people where I can't find the sources or very recent ones where I can't find all that many decent independent ones (the latter ones will get created when there's an obit, I guess). I'm really pleased with the size of Category:New Zealand M?ori academics, Category:New Zealand women academics and even Category:Samoan academics. I've started Category:New Zealand academics lacking usual sources for academics where there probably should be more sources, I'm following these up with the Royal Society of New Zealand. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal
Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

I've done a bit of a thing over at Draft:Enjoy Public Art Gallery. I have recently downloaded and started to play with Index New Zealand https://natlib.govt.nz/collections/a-z/index-new-zealand-innz This is a dataset of ~ 800000 items, including ~ 12000 obits. Pretty much every one of the 800000 items is a reliable source. I expect that there's quite a bit of cross-over with the DNZB work I've done previously and this work will be related to that in so far as I'll be creating aricles in a semi-automated fashion based on authoritative sources, but I'll be lifting my references from INZ but they'll point to other publications. I'll post some examples when I have them. Stuartyeates (talk) 08:41, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi all,
I'm trying to fix (or at the very least improve) the Colin McCahon page. At the moment, it's a real mess and very poor quality. And kind of help at all would be of benefit.
If you are a Wikipedia pro, there are some formatting issues that could be cleared up. If you are knowledgeable on the topic, there is a huge amount of further research required.
